Here at Aderans, our number one priority is your hair and scalp! Whether you want to take better care of your bio hair, scalp, or learn how to look after your wig, we can help! Let's delve into what good healthy hair is and how we can help with issues concerning hair loss…

Healthy hair is defined as having perfect shine, little breakage, no split ends… the list goes on! Sadly, that is not true for most of us. Everyday styling and chemical treatments can leave our hair looking lacklustre, flat or frizzy.

So here are my top hair care tips for whatever hair type you may have:

1. Wash your hair with appropriate shampoo for your hair type! - I recommend washing your hair three times a week on average. - Did you know - curly hair can go longer between washes than straight hair.

- If you wear a wig you need to keep the base clean. I recommend using our Aderans Aftercare Kit! The base of the wig will attract sebum, dead skin, and environmental pollutants so it needs cleansing like any other garment you wear. A failure to keep this clean will cause havoc for your scalp and increase the amount of bacteria present upon the skin. Top tip: If you have greasy bio hair, dry shampoo is your best friend! However, try not to rely on this product too heavily as it can cause build-up on the scalp, clogging your hair follicles.

2. For both bio hair and wigs, always condition the mid-length and ends. Never rub conditioner directly onto your scalp or the top of a wig.

3. Use a heat protector when using styling devices! Your hairdryer should always be on a low - medium heat setting and styling tools like straighteners should be no higher than 130 - 150 degrees Celsius on bio hair. For information on heat styling a wig, click here. Always blast the hair dry to remove most of the moisture before styling, as this is when the hair is at its weakest. It is also important to protect your hair and scalp from harmful UV rays, I recommend wearing a hat, headwear or SPF when in full sunshine, depending on the level of coverage required.

4. For bio hair, use a wide-toothed comb to detangle your hair first thing in the morning and last thing at night. Always brush from the ends up to the root, no tugging at knots as this causes damage!

5. Sleep on a silk pillowcase! Silk helps keep the hair and skin moisturised as it doesn’t absorb moisture, it also stops friction frizz! 6. For bio hair, regular trims from your hairdresser will keep split ends at bay!

7. Don't forget the scalp is an extension of the facial skin so treat it kindly.

Frequently asked questions:

Does smoking affect hair growth?

We all know that smoking can be the cause of many nasty diseases and the hair is equally affected. There is a strong correlation between consistent smoking and the onset of androgen alopecia. Smoking restricts blood flow so the amount of nutrients reaching the follicle is reduced. Oxidative stress increases free radicals in the body which can promote hair loss. Smoking promotes cytokines, proteins that can increase inflammation which in turn can scar the follicle making hair brittle or shed.

What about alcohol?

Alcohol dehydrates the body and hair contains up to 25% water in each strand. If this level falls, then the hair will become brittle and prone to breakage. Dehydration also stops the body from absorbing nutrients and the body will divert nutrients to the main organs in the body and the hair can starve. Drinking the recommended 8 glasses of water a day will keep hair hydrated, improving texture and shine.

Does exercise help hair growth?

Regular exercise not only promotes good all-round health in the body it also helps your hair. When we exercise blood circulation increases and brings a better flow of oxygen and nutrients to the follicle, improving hair growth. Exercise relieves stress, another key contributor to hair loss, so the less stress you suffer the better your hair. Hair is like any other part of the body and needs care and attention to be in its optimal condition for growth and appearance.
