"Shaving my remaining hair was an immense relief!"
Written by Guest Contributor Megan
Last year my world was turned upside down. It started after catching Covid; severe nerve pain on my scalp and down my neck, followed by red blotchy patches and rapid hair loss. I also had to sell my dog grooming business, as I started having a reaction to the dog hair.
The GP prescribed all sorts of lotions and potions, but nothing helped. I paid to see two private dermatologists; both took biopsies, but neither could provide me with any answers. Luckily though, the nerve pain began to slowly reduce.
So, hair loss.
For me, the process mapped out in line with the stages of grief. Denial, anger, bargaining, depression and moving towards acceptance. Still, for me personally that process hasn't been linear, it has been a rough squiggly line. I still have days where I wake up and grieve my old life, but generally, I'm in a much better place.
Whilst everyone is different, here are some things that worked for me:
The Hair Loss Community:
Firstly, the hair loss community are incredible! They’re so supportive and everyone is happy to help you where they can. If you're at the start of your hair loss journey, I promise that if you reach out you will make so many new friends. Those friends will lift you up and support you when you need it too!
Sharing My Story:
Coming out to friends and family, or posting about the experience on social media gave me the boost I needed to start wearing wigs outside of the house. Social media, especially, gave me the opportunity to take back control and share my story.
Shaving My Remaining Hair:
This is not for everyone, I know, but seeing my hair come out in clumps was just too distressing. As soon as it was gone fully, I felt an immense sense of relief. A hot shower has now become a pleasure again! Plus, it makes wearing wigs so much quicker and easier.
Build A Wig Wardrobe:
I've never been a 'girly-girl' but when I started losing my hair, I felt like I was losing a part of myself. Wearing wigs has given me back my confidence, and finding quality wigs from reputable companies like Aderans Trendco has been a blessing for that reason. Wearing wigs was the start of me rebuilding my life and I finally feel like myself again.
By doing all of these things I've built up enough confidence and pride that I will be modelling in the Aderans Fashion Show later in the year in Notting Hill! I am so excited to see so many friendly faces from within the hair loss community, and I would love to see yours there too! You can grab a ticket and join me here: https://aderansuk.com/fashion-show
