Meet_Emma_Furlong_-_Our_Aderans_Trichologist_v2

Like many things in life, my journey into the fascinating world of hair loss, scalp micropigmentation (SMP), and trichology was unexpected. I often reflect on how I got here with a smile on my face.

My original career path was set in Human Resource Management, following my degree, but I quickly found the internal politics of the corporate world suffocating. To pay off my student loan and fund my move to Brighton in 2006, I took an admin job with an alternative hair company—Aderans (Trendco at the time). My mum had a wig from Trendco during her chemotherapy for breast cancer in 2005, so I already understood the profound impact these products could have. The job sounded interesting, and I assumed it would tide me over while I reassessed my HR future.

But life had other plans.

I fell in love with the company and the incredible transformations it provided to those experiencing hair loss. I absorbed everything I could, learning about different hair loss conditions, treatments, and solutions. Over time, I became an integral part of the business, working with both customers and professionals in the industry. I advanced to Sales & Marketing Manager and worked internationally as part of the EU Management team. I had a job I loved and a fantastic team around me.

Then micropigmentation came along and turned everything upside down.

I had arranged for one of our salons to send a team member for eyebrow micropigmentation training, specifically to support our alopecia and chemo clients. I went along to observe the training and—boom—my eyes were wide open! I’ve never been into beauty or cosmetics; my makeup routine is as basic as they come. Yet, here I was, experiencing a light-bulb moment over semi-permanent eyebrows. So, in my late 20s, I trained in something completely new and unexpected but perfectly aligned with my passion for helping others.

I specialized in brows, focusing on alopecia and hair-loss clients. Many of the incredible women who trusted me in my early days as a practitioner are still my clients today—something I’m immensely proud of.

By 2014, after the birth of my second son, I knew it was time to take the leap and make micropigmentation my sole focus. I left my beloved job (okay, maybe I looked back once or twice!) and threw myself into this new path. Around the same time, I was exploring scalp hair-loss techniques and became fascinated by the evolution of SMP (Scalp Micropigmentation). It was another light-bulb moment—the perfect fusion of my hair loss expertise and micropigmentation skills.

While I still offer hair-loss brow micropigmentation, my main focus is now SMP and comprehensive hair-loss solutions. When done correctly and in combination with other treatments, SMP is one of the most effective solutions available. My goal is always natural, undetectable results that restore confidence—it’s the most rewarding part of my job.

In 2015, I partnered with Finishing Touches Group to create a hair-loss micropigmentation education program. Teaching others how to help those in need brought me a new level of fulfilment and a fresh challenge.

Over the next few years, I continued to develop my skills and knowledge of hair loss while bringing up my two wonderfully exhausting little men (definitely my favourite ‘job’) and expanding the education programme and clinic practice. I am an advocate for continued professional development and study various courses and treatments and gained my Level 4 Trichology qualification in 2020.

In 2022, my career came full circle when I joined the Aderans Hove salon team as their resident hair loss specialist. I now provide trichology consultations, treatments, and micropigmentation services while offering support and advice to those navigating hair loss. I never regretted my decision to take a more clinical path in 2014—though I did take a slight sideways step back to my Aderans family!

I not only offer hair-loss treatments; I also support via groups and in person when I can. I continue to educate and am privileged to be invited to speak globally on the treatments I offer. I am also expanding what I do to try and give more accessible advice to both those affected by hair loss and those who can help; studies have shown that up to 60% of hair loss sufferers would rather have more hair than either money or friends.  The psychological impact cannot and must not be underestimated.

This work isn’t always easy. The challenges our clients face are real and often emotional. But every challenge is worth it. The knowledge and skills I’ve gained over the years have been invaluable, and the ability to help people regain their confidence is priceless.

I’m based at the Hove clinic and offer online consultations. If you're experiencing hair loss or looking for expert advice, I’d love to hear from you. To book a consultation, or just get in touch, click here
