My hair has always been thin, it took ages to grow and when it did, it looked wispy and fine, I never really felt feminine or beautiful. In recent years my hair started to recede around my temples, and I started to find some bald patches on my scalp. I noticed my hair loss the most in the shower where it came out in clumps and clogged up the drain, it was very distressing and I lost my confidence.

At the beginning of my hair loss journey, I was feeling pretty down, especially because I was told that my hair loss wasn’t that bad and there were more important things to worry about. I turned to wigs purely by accident. I bought a cheap costume wig, and although it did look fake, I liked the colour and the feeling of having long thick hair for the first time, simply put - I felt feminine and sexy. I began looking into wigs more seriously and quickly discovered the wonderful world of alternative hair. That was the first time I came across words like monofilament and lace front

I love learning, so I threw myself into the wig world! I decided to try on some styles in our local wig shop to get an idea of what is out there. I bought my first 'proper' wig then and have never looked back!

Was I comfortable and confident wearing it? The short answer is no, not straight away. Wearing a wig felt alien and unnatural so I wore it around the house to get used to it. I would look in the mirror every few seconds to see what it looked like and even to check if it moved when I walked, like bio hair does. The more I did that, the more I started to feel comfortable. I went in the garden with it on and then out to the bins, just to practice being outside with it on. Over a matter of days, I felt confident enough to go to the post office with it on and then the day after that to the supermarket. With every little outing, my confidence grew and I started to feel that this was the right decision for me.

I started a YouTube channel as a wig reviewer a few months after that first wig purchase. It was great to make connections with other people experiencing hair loss. I started my Instagram account a few weeks later (kaywearswigs) and with that, I found the most supportive bunch of people: the hair loss community! They made me feel heard and seen for the first time!

A year into my wig-wearing journey, I decided to shave my head. It was a big decision but for me a logical next step! Eventually, I wore my wig to work. At the time I worked as a secondary school teacher, and I was surprised when none of my colleagues noticed and neither did the kids! After quitting teaching, I told everyone who would listen that I wear wigs, I am now so secure in my choice that I want the whole world to know so I can help others on their hair loss journey.

I can't thank my hair loss community enough for being my rock in the never linear hair loss journey, I would have been lost without their support and friendship.

I am very grateful to Aderans Trendco for making me an ambassador! I have grown not only in confidence but as a person since sharing my story.  Wearing wigs has been a game changer, it has made me accept my bio hair for what it is and helped me to let go.

Find what works for you, nobody else is in your shoes!
