Did you know that August is Hair Loss Awareness Month?!
This month provides another opportunity to educate, support, and empower those affected by hair loss or those who would like to support a loved one going through this journey. In today’s blog, we talk about how to manage and cope with hair loss.

Understanding Hair Loss

Hair loss can occur due to various factors, including genetics, medical conditions, medications, and lifestyle choices. The most common types include:

  1. Androgenetic Alopecia: Also known as male or female pattern baldness, this hereditary condition affects a significant portion of the population. Men typically experience a receding hairline and balding on the crown, while women may notice thinning on the top and crown of the scalp.

  2. Alopecia Areata: An autoimmune disorder where the body's immune system attacks hair follicles, leading to round patches of hair loss on the scalp and other body parts.

  3. Telogen Effluvium: Often triggered by stress, illness, or hormonal changes, this temporary condition causes hair to shed more rapidly than usual.

  4. Traction Alopecia: Resulting from hairstyles that pull on the hair, such as tight ponytails or braids, leading to hair loss along the hairline.

  5. Chemotherapy-Induced Hair Loss: Chemotherapy targets rapidly dividing cancer cells but also affects other rapidly dividing cells, including those in hair follicles. This can lead to significant hair loss all over the body, not just on the scalp. Hair loss from chemotherapy is typically temporary, with hair regrowing after treatment ends, although the texture and colour may change.

Coping with Hair Loss

Experiencing hair loss can be emotionally challenging, we would advise looking into the following…

  1. Support: Connect with others going through similar experiences. Our support groups and workshops can provide comfort, advice, and a sense of community.

  2. Educate Yourself: Understanding the type of hair loss you're experiencing and its underlying causes can help you to make informed decisions about treatment options. We would recommend speaking to a hair loss specialist for advice

  3. Embrace Change: Experiment with new hairstyles, wigs, or head coverings to find what makes you feel confident and comfortable. Sometimes, a fresh look can be a powerful boost to self-esteem!

  4. Focus on Health: Maintain a balanced diet, exercise regularly, and manage stress. A healthy lifestyle can improve overall well-being and potentially slow hair loss progression.

Treatment Options

While hair loss can be permanent in some cases, various treatments are available to help manage and potentially reverse the condition:

  1. Medications: If you are experiencing hair loss, your first step should be to speak to a trichologist or GP, they should be able to identify what is causing it and recommend the next steps.

  2. Laser Therapy: Low-level laser therapy (LLLT) can stimulate hair growth by increasing blood flow to hair follicles. To find out more, click here.

  3. Scalp Micropigmentation: This non-invasive procedure involves tattooing tiny dots on the scalp to create the appearance of a fuller head of hair. We offer this service at our Aderans Hair Centres.

Raising Awareness

Hair Loss Awareness Month is not just about recognising the physical aspects of hair loss but also addressing the emotional and psychological impact. By raising awareness, we can work towards reducing the stigma associated with hair loss and encouraging open conversations about this common issue.

  1. Share Stories: Personal stories and experiences can help others feel less isolated and more understood. Sharing your journey can inspire and support those facing similar challenges. Take a look back through our previous blog posts to read other individuals stories.

  2. Educate Others: Education is a powerful tool in breaking down misconceptions around hair loss. We recommend following our Aderans social media pages where you can find and share information about hair loss. Attending events can also help to raise awareness of different types of hair loss. Our next event will be the Aderans Charity Fashion Show, save the date for the 18th of October in Brighton! More information here.

  3. Support Research: Contributing to or supporting organisations and charities focused on hair loss research can lead to advancements in treatments and, ultimately, a better quality of life for those affected. Find information on our affiliated hair loss charities here.

Hair Loss Awareness Month serves as a reminder that hair loss is a common experience. Let's use this month to promote awareness and empower those facing hair loss.
